never having bought dental insurance before can be scary, anyone have any tips to avoid misunderstandings, and high costs, and things like this ? Corporations clearly can trick people to get into their pocket books big time, so what are some things to look out for and avoid when you have never bought dental insurance before? (In California if it matters)

Buy from a reputable insurance company. The plans through the Blue Crosses I believe are or were Delta dental. Give them a shot.

It will be expensive, so search (Google) for reputable insurance companies. Delta Dental or Concordia are a few I am familiare with. May be others. Buy from a reputable company. Since it is separate from health insurance, it will be expensive. No way around it!
